Samples of unconventional jazz piano and strings, supple drums, long-lost vocals and whimsical field recordings are snuggled into a warm groovy embrace. An analog dream parting melancholy clouds, his emotive deep house mesmerizes but doesn't back down with its movement of sharp kicks and muffled breakbeats.

Growing up by the Baltic Sea in Kiel, Germany, Genz began sampling, scratching, releasing mixtapes and DJing with an ear to hip hop, funk and breaks. Yet when experimental ambient techno entered his soundworld, he directed his sampling skills towards crafting the unexpected in techno and house. After meeting Smallpeople duo Julius Steinhoff and Just von Ahlefeld in Hamburg, he started churning out deep(ish) house tracks as Moomin, his debut album joining the melodic house core of the Hamburg-based Smallville label in 2011. He founded his label Closer to extend his own sound, experimenting in the studio with vintage samplers and drum machines, and to open up further collaboration with Steinhoff, von Ahlefeld and other artists who take a mellow-experimental approach to house. On his latest, Yesterday's Tomorrow, he takes that approach further, accelerating his hip-hop sampling with drum and bass and jungle interventions.

Moomin's appeared at Panorama Bar, Rex Club, Corsica Studios, Dimensions Festival, Gottwood and other international electronic festivals, including this year's Bass Coast in Vancouver before landing at MUTEK with a new live set of soulful, charming house.
