“For an older generation of intellectuals, who located the politics of music in lyrics, or in the public actions of rock stars, dance music's anonymity and hedonism can seem regressive. Yet dance music culture [...] has enormous credibility amongst those still committed to the notion of 'oppositional' popular culture…” - David Hesmondhalgh
Clubs the world over have been instrumental incubators of social change—historically for gay and lesbian, and hispanic and black rights movements. The birth of rave hinged on utopian notions of community and solidarity. In London, the recent maligning and closing (and reopening) of Fabric, the authoritarian crackdown and mass public protests in support of clubs in Georgia, marches organized by the electronic music communities in Berlin against the rise of the far-right, and even the founding of EXIT festival years ago in direct reaction to politics in Serbia—reveal that the scenes and communities organized around electronic music and digital arts cultures have a deep propensity for engagement and action. This discussion brings together an international cast to discuss specific incidents in their own vicinities as well as their own personal views on the power of protest and activism in the creative communities to which they belong.
