First Wave of MUTEK 2011 Artists Announced!

Now that we've settled into our new home at the revamped Society of Arts and Technology (SAT), which many of you know and love from our past editions, MUTEK is pleased to reveal the first performers for its highly anticipated 12th edition! Just to recap, MUTEK 2011 will take place from June 1st to the 5th in numerous indoor and outdoor venues throughout the ever-growing Quartier des Spectacles. We're can't wait to convert this thriving cultural sector of downtown Montreal into our own digital playground. Now that we've settled into our new home at the revamped Society of Arts and Technology (SAT), which many of you know and love from our past editions, MUTEK is pleased to reveal the first performers for its highly anticipated 12th edition!

People said some very kind things about MUTEK in 2010, so you can rest assured that we're aiming to live up to our international standing as "North America's foremost electronic music festival" (Time Out Chicago) with a program that is "gloriously eclectic, in both sound and origin" (New York Times). In 2011, we're pressing forward with what we do best: reinventing the festival platform and evolving what audiences love about the combination of MUTEK, Montreal, and the launch of the summer festival season.

As with every year, our goal is to present a wide mix of artists and performers who range from the well-known looking to redefine themselves, to those breakthrough acts who will no doubt fascinate unsuspecting audiences.  Today's announcement is just the tip of the iceberg for what we expect to be one of MUTEK's most ambitious editions yet.

For now, we're pleased to reveal the first 31 acts coming along for the ride:

AMON TOBIN (BR)
ANSTAM (DE)
BABE RAINBOW (CA)
CALAMALKA (CA)
DAEGA SOUND SYSTEM (CA)

SIRIUSMO (DE)
STEPHEN BEAUPRÉ (CA)
TERRY LEE BROWN (DE)
TRAVERSABLE WORMHOLE (US)
TRISTAN PERICH (US)
WAREIKA (DE)

The highlights are already numerous.

Long a mysterious alias for AKUFEN's Marc Leclair, HORROR INC will finally emerge from the shadows and onto center stage with a world premiere live set and massively anticipated new material.

The critically acclaimed FOUR TET, known to many for his classic Rounds album, makes his MUTEK debut here with live band ROCKETNUMBERNINE for a brand-new collaboration.

Montreal's favourite duo MODESELEKTOR returns to the festival for a DJ set, headlining an evening dubbed MODESELEKTION that they've helped curate. The bill features some of the hottest up and coming names in bass music on their new Monkeytown imprint: SIRIUSMO, FALTY DL, and ANSTAM. Montreal wunderkind JACQUES GREENE will also be joining the bill.

One of Ninja Tune's most talented veterans, AMON TOBIN, returns to his one-time home of Montreal for an audacious audio-visual debut of his new album.

The premieres are, as usual, plentiful. Live-electronics jam bands WAREIKA and ELEKTRO GUZZI will be in town for their North American debuts, making a very potent case for propulsive techno of a decidedly organic brand.  Japan's RADIQ will also be bringing his jazz-inflected house music to the continent for a special debut.

Veteran experimental techno producer and current Touch recording artist MIKA VAINIO returns to Montreal for a very special premiere of his brand-new live set.  He'll be joined by up-and-coming Bristol-based duo EMPTYSET, whose austere and atmospheric techno bears the natural influence of Vainio's legendary duo, PAN SONIC.

On the digital-analog arts front, UK's SCULPTURE will be making their North American debut with custom-designed picture discs that, when played, reveal zoetropic film works.

West-coast Canadian talent will be amply represented with a troupe of talented producers. COBBLESTONE JAZZ's DANUEL TATE returns to MUTEK for a live showcase based upon his recent solo debut, Mexican Hotbox.  Also, Vancouver's New Forms Festival will be presenting a line-up of their signature acts, including DAEGA SOUND SYSTEM, CALAMALKA, and MICHAEL RED.

Did we mention that the coveted Saturday-night DJ spot is being filled by none other than Border Community boss JAMES HOLDEN?  One of the label's rising talents, LUKE ABBOTT, has also been confirmed.

Many more announcements are in the works for the coming weeks and months. We're expanding our program of panels and workshops, and by the time June 1st arrives, nearly 200 artists and professionals will be joining for the express purpose of making 2011 a banner year. As always, the festival website will be MUTEK central for news, developments, podcasts, and other forms of music love.
