These international masters are joined by the growing ranks of emergent artists working in this realm, underlining the festival’s commitment to new forms and new talent—notably, NONOTAK from France, WOULG and MAOTIK & METAMETRIC from Québec, and REYKJAVIK 606 and MICROFEEL who represent the local contingent, and whose participation in this year’s program puts them in remarkable and international company. Special installations and presentations also spice up the program throughout the week with OLIVER RATSI's installation Delta exhibiting in the basement of the Fabrica Estrella Damm and HERMAN KOLGEN’s Dust, at the Institut Français.
The NOCTURNE series of late night performances with its global cast of characters represents the most diverse arrangement of primarily live acts ever staged by MUTEK.ES. Headliners include: MAGIC MOUNTAIN HIGH, PANTHA DU PRINCE, KANGDING RAY, THE PERSUADER, VERONICA VASICKA and Barcelona’s own JOHN TALABOT with AXEL BOMAN, as TALABOMAN.
IT’S A LOCAL AFFAIR
Catalonia, Spain and the Latin American connection
The Spanish scene enjoys increasing recognition from international media for its contributions to the evolving world of electronic and digital artistry, these days. And MUTEK.ES continues its commitment to growing and cultivating this community, serving as an important platform for reintroducing local artists to local audiences in special showcases and exclusive contexts, but also by acting as a forum for debuts and new projects, a laboratory that encourages and enriches the local scene by placing it in the international context of the festival and propelling it through the larger circuit of other MUTEKs and associated global events.
As an embodiment of its mission to build bridges, this year’s program reinforces the connections between Catalan, Québec and Latin American artists; representing Mexico, Argentina and Chile, many of the latter now based in Barcelona. The ongoing conversation and exchange between these points is deep and rich, and this year the festival is proud to present premieres by Spaniards EDUARDO DE LA CALLE and BIRDSMAKINGMACHINE; from Argentina the contingent includes FRANCO CINELLI and DOKSER; with the final names in this year’s PLAY series are concentrated from Barcelona: EQUIPO will premiere his new live show and EP Simulaciones; LOPPKIO vs GNOMOLAB unites Alvaro Garca (aka Moduleight) and Pedro Pina with the visual wizardry of renowned Catalan artist GNOMOLAB; FEDERICO MONTI presents a work based on recordings made with 50 different hard drives; while live soundtrack artists FRANCESCA BANCHELLO and EMILIANO ZELADA from Italy, reimagine the film Twin Drive, a commission by Movistar Livesoundtracks.
*PLAY 1 & 2 take place at the Convent Sant Agusti and PLAY 3 at Fabrica Estrella Damm.
EXPERIENCE PROGRAM AND FINAL PLAY PRESENTED BY ESTRELLA DAMM AT FABRICA ESTRELLA DAMM
Barcelona itself remains a crucial component of the festival experience and this year, MUTEK will occupy 8 different venues throughout the city, inspiring festivalgoers to navigate new spaces and contexts while still enjoying the intimate and human scale of the programming.
Announced a few weeks ago, the Antigua Fabrica Estrella Damm, the factory and the phenomenal venue belonging to the Estrella Damm Brewery, will host the EXPERIENCE program and the final PLAY program on Saturday, March 7—all free of charge. An exclusive and exceptional space, the festival is particularly excited to be presenting an ambitious lineup of cutting edge artistic creativity here. PLAY 3 is entirely concerned with audiovisual works: Sebastian Seifert’s, MICROFEEL project joins a bill with WOULG and REYKYJAVIK 606. A major highlight of previous editions, he’ll be presenting his latest album Back to the Seed, in audiovisual form, accompanied by a cello player.
DIGI_SECTION At Convent Sant Agusti and Fabrica Estrella Damm
Designed to augment the performances at the festival by providing deeper context and access, the free daytime component will include artist talks, demonstrations and workshops.
The headquarters of the festival and the site for PLAY 1 & 2, the Convent Sant Augusti hosts: a presentation and overview of the works of NONOTAK; a 2 day Ableton workshop entitled “The Sound of the Room,” hosted by Scott Monteith (DEADBEAT) who will provide participants with the ways and means to create pieces that can then be improvised and presented at the Fabrica Estrella Damm on Saturday afternoon (registration required); and Sebastian Seifert from MICROFEEL will demo a music creation application for tablets and phones called Oscilab.
MUTEK.ES is also happy to welcome back Movistar Livesoundtracks, (a festival itself, happening at the end of April in Barcelona) after having collaborated with their live soundtrack projects in the past. They will present a panel on Friday, March 6 concerned with the influence of music in films, how sound contributes to the visual frame of memories and how these images later become part of the collective imagination.
On Saturday at the Fabrica Estrella Damm: HERMAN KOLGEN will present his history, current projects and creative process; Nicolas Boritch (director) and Simon Geilfus (artist + coder) of the French “visual label” Antivj will provide a broad overview of their working methods, tools and their audiovisual projects; and there will also be a presentation from PLAYMOSS a music streaming company presented by Gerardo Carton and Alexi Fernandez.
And finally, the PHONOS artist in residence, whose work with vintage synthesizers can be experienced during the day at the L´Auditori de Barcelona, is Estefania AA.
