DIGI_SECTION, MUTEK.JP’s free daytime educational program, will take place at Red Bull Studios, Tokyo on November 3 and 4, 2016. For curious explorers, music enthusiasts and creative professionals, this component of the festival fosters accessibility and exchange and features thoughtful interviews and presentations with artists and creators, and  hands-on interaction with the latest technologies. (All activities will take place in English, unless otherwise noted.)

NOVEMBER 3 | 1PM - 9PM  

In the conference room, ROBIN FOX, HERMAN KOLGEN and MARTIN MESSIER present their artistic work and an overview of their careers. CARSTEN NICOLAI (Alva Noto) and OLAF BENDER (Byetone) will take part in a panel presented by Goethe-Institut Japan, moderated by EIICHI SAWADO, focussed on the relationship between visual arts and music from Japanese and German cultural and artistic points of view.

In the lobby, ROLAND host a workshop with Japanese artist YUTA HOSHI who will animate a music session using ROLAND Aira products, and will dig into DAW integration and the recording of tracks.

NATIVE INSTRUMENTS, the Berlin-based software and musical instruments manufacturer, will showcase a NATIVE SESSIONS under the theme, Creative Interfaces, which will highlight the development of new music production methods. Ushio Kensuke, aka AGRAPH (who handles animation and music on commercials, such as Ping-Pong) and Junk-e-Cat will give a live performance during the session. Minimalist techno sorceress AKIKO KIYAMA will also articulate her process and later that night will perform live (with special guests). DOMMUNE, using a Blackmagic Studio Camera will live stream part of these activities.

 DOMMUNE, using a Blackmagic Studio Camera, will live stream part of these activities. 

NOVEMBER 4 | 10AM - 5PM

In the lobby, the DERIVATIVE team and special guests will deliver a workshop on how to use their industry standard, TouchDesigner software in order to create beautiful art and intuitive tools to light, move, track, control, map, automate and synchronize audio and visual. This workshop is aimed at novices and beginners. It is hands-on and participants are required to bring their own laptop running TouchDesigner to follow along. The workshop will take place from 10am to 5pm, followed by drinks. (In English and Japanese.)

Also that afternoon, Planet MUTEK is a panel discussion that convenes the directors from 3 of its signature festivals: Founder and Director Alain Mongeau, who started the organization in 2000, from headquarters in Montreal, Damian Romero from Mexico City (founded in 2003), and Shu Iwanami who has just embarked on the first edition in Tokyo. They will discuss networks of digital art and electronic music, its global and local implications, the mechanics of festival producing, and more.
